Numbers Chapter 25
So Israel was just vibing in Shittim, but then the crew started getting wild with the Moab babes.
And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
They went to the people for some sacrifices to their gods, and everyone was like, "Let’s feast and bow to these deities."
And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.
Israel got tight with Baal-peor, and God was seriously not feeling it.
And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.
The Lord hit up Moses, saying, "Gather the leaders of the people and hang them up in front of me, so I can chill on my rage towards Israel."
And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.
Moses told the judges of Israel, "Yo, eliminate all the dudes who are down with Baal-peor."
And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.
Then this one Israelite bro rolled up with a Midian girl right in front of Moses and everyone else, who were all crying by the tabernacle entrance.
And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who {were} weeping {before} the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest, peeped this and was like, "Nah, I can’t let that slide," jumped up with a javelin in hand.
And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw {it}, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;
He chased the Israelite bro into the tent and took out both him and the girl. That’s how the plague eased up for the Israelites.
And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.
A total of twenty-four thousand folks went down in that plague.
And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.
The Lord spoke to Moses,
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
"Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest, has turned my rage away from the Israelites because he was repping for me, so I didn’t wipe them out."
Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy. {for...: Heb. with my zeal}
"So let them know, 'I’m giving him my peace deal.'"
Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:
"He’ll hold onto it, and his kids too, like an eternal priesthood, 'cause he was all in for his God and set things right for the Israelites."
And he shall have it, and his seed after him, {even} the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.
The Israelite who got taken out with the Midian girl was Zimri, son of Salu, a big name from the Simeon squad.
Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, {even} that was slain with the Midianitish woman, {was} Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites. {chief...: Heb. house of a father}
And the Midian girl who got taken out was Cozbi, daughter of Zur; he was kind of a big deal among his people in Midian.
And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain {was} Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he {was} head over a people, {and} of a chief house in Midian.
The Lord told Moses,
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
"Go after the Midianites and handle them."
Vex the Midianites, and smite them:
"They’re pulling sus moves on you, dragging you into that Peor mess, and Cozbi, the daughter of a Midian prince, who got taken out during that plague."
For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor's sake.
